Notes / Study Guide

* “What are you skills and abilities” is an appropriate question on an interview. * A person who has critical thinking skills would probably say, “I develop new products and processes based on analysis”. * A person who has problem solving skills would probably say, “I served on a committee to help our school serve meals that are more appealing to students and increased profit.” * A person who has technology, resource and information skills would probably say, “I researched using periodicals, books, electronics, and human resources.” * When deciding what to wear to an interview, wear clothes that would be one step above what would be appropriate to wear on the job

* During an interview questions will be asked to find out if the applicant is the best person for the job. * If you answer questions about your qualifications openly and objectively during an interview your are demonstrating honesty. * If you direct an applicant to a potential employer for a job interview you just made a referral. * If you don’t understand a question an interviewer asks; always ask him/her to clarify it.

* Never ask an employer what services or products they offer. You should have already researched the company. * One of the first things to do to prepare for a job interview is to research the company. * Private employment agencies like Man Power and Mega Force charge for their services. * These are companies that will seek out and find a place to get you a job interview * The Employment Security Commission is a public government employment agency. * This is FREE

* A candidate with little work experience will need to focus attention on their skills of their resume. * A chronological resume works best for a person with continuous work experience. * A pervious employer would make the best reference for a job applicant. * A resume is a document containing appropriate and important facts about a person who is applying for a job. * A resume organizes experiences and skills. * The purpose of a resume is to showcase your knowledge and skills.

* A common reason people get fired is because they fail to follow the rules. * A high school diploma is not acceptable proof of to an employer of your US citizenship. * A W-4 form reports withholdings, allowances and exemptions. * Handling problems and criticism gracefully and maturely is exhibiting professionalism. * If a student has excessive unexcused absences on his/her transcript, probably is not very dependable. * Your legal name must be listed on a job application.

* Most fired workers lose their jobs because of poor human relations. * Networking, employment agencies, and classified ads can be sources of job leads * Psychological tests are given to determine how well one will adjust to a job. * Regular paychecks are not an employee benefit. * The amount of salary or wages earned for certain period of time before deductions are with is gross pay. * The first step in creating a network is to build a contact list. * Your ability to work with others is referring to the interpersonal SCANS skill.

* A cover letter is sent with a resume. * A letter of application for employment should be sent to the person who has the authority to hire you. * A reference letter is the same as a recommendation letter. * Cover letters are used to highlight information in an accompanying resume. * In the conclusion of a cover letter or letter of application you can request for a interview, contact information and times, and write a statement of appreciation for the employers time and consideration.

* Mail your follow up letter to the person who conducted the interview. * Never request a interview in an follow up letter. * The main reason for a cover letter is to make the employer want to read the applicants resume.

* A career portfolio is helpful in a job interview because it helps showcase the applicant’s skills, interests and abilities.
