Welcome to Year 1 Miss Povey Miss Holyoake

About Year 1 In Year 1 children are now expected to sit and listen for longer periods of time. They are also expected to do more written work. In the morning we have an hour literacy and numeracy lesson. It is a lot of hard work! However in the afternoon the children can still explore and learn through play, similar to Reception.

Numeracy What your children need to know: Order and write numbers to 20 Number bonds to 10 Add and subtract up to 20 Count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s Know 1 more or less than a number and 10 more or less. Understand money

How to use a Number Line Addition Number Line (4+6=?) Start with the biggest number and jump the smallest number. Subtraction Number Line (9-4=?) Start with the biggest number and jump the smallest number.

Spellings and Reading Children should be able to read and spell all Reception words, Year 1 words and some of the Year 2 words. Get children to read the words to you, cover them up and sound them out using phonics, then write them down.

Over the Holidays… Please read to your children and listen to them read. Practice spellings and any maths targets. Remember… Please label all uniforms, book bags and PE kits. Have a nice day – See you soon!!
