1 Animal Adaptation Webquest Rules: If you need to click on a link, make sure you are “viewing” the powerpoint. If you click on a link and it doesn’t show up, hit esc and then look on the bottom of your screen to see a window flashing. Take turns. Everyone should be writing and answering the questions at the same time. (Do not have a scribe and then copy later…that won’t help your grade) Answer all question in your notebook Before you have a question, make sure you read through this again.

2 Warm-up Visit the website at the bottom of the slide. See how fast you can identify the correct adaptations for the animals. In your warm-up box write your favorite plant or animal.

3 Vocabulary (a reminder) (just read it over) Natural Selection – A process by which characteristics that make an individual better suited to its environment become more common in a species. Behavior (animal) : A response to external and internal stimuli. Competition - the struggle between organisms to survive as they attempt to use the same limited resource. Predation- an interaction in which one organism kills another for food. Symbiosis – a close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species.

4 Adapting to the environment Go to the following website: thsysflr/adapt.html thsysflr/adapt.html Summarize each of the following sections: – Adaptation – Environments – Environments change – Physical adaptation

5 How do different kinds of adaptations allow organisms to survive in their environment? Include in your answer: – Examples of variations in structures, behaviors, and composition. – Why organisms in similar environments may have similar adaptations. – Why organisms in similar environments may have different adaptations.

6 Conclusion 1. What types of evidence for evolution do we have? 2. Why do species have a tendency to change over time?

7 Change Over Time WEBQUEST *THIS slide pertains to your webquest and handout distributed in class today (3/5/13). This webquest is due on THURSDAY. Use the following website: pperedmoth.html to explore how environmental factors will affect the genotype of peppered moths over time. pperedmoth.html Answer questions 1-5 in the last section, “Data and Analysis.”
