Welcome to Grade 4 Ms. Fidai Mrs. Canfield Ms. Irish Division 7 & 8 September June 2013

About Your Children ’ s Teachers We are friendly, kind, and dedicated We base our programs on the brain and learning principles we know to be true We are a team; we value each other, our staff, and especially you and your children We believe in best practices and strive for excellence

Giving Your Child Ownership of Their Learning Let them do their homework - remember the old saying “ if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he will eat for life ”. If your child is unhappy regarding a school-related issue, please have them sort it out on their own if possible. This will enhance their problem-solving skills.

Our classrooms are... Places for learning Places for discovery Places of mutual respect Places for teamwork and cooperation Productive places Safe places

We are committed to the following principles: Be Kind Be Safe Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Fair and Honest

Homework expectations Homework is to be completed every night up to 40 min in Grade 4 If they are “stuck” remind them that they can ask for help from you, a friend or their teacher If your child does not have homework, they should use the time to read, review materials for tests, research or play interactive, online games across various subjects available on our virtual classroom page.

How to Assist Your Child with Homework Set up a quiet, light, organized and consistent homework location with little distraction A regular homework time (after a snack but as early as possible) Have resources available

Communication Home Planners are the students’ responsibilities Are reviewed and signed by you Are checked by the teacher(s) on routinely * Major concerns = / phone call home Other news and on going information is available on the Grade 4 Virtual Classroom

Parent Support Research shows that schools with strong, positive, parent involvement (like Irwin Park!) result in excellent academic achievement. Please get involved! We need class moms/dads, and volunteers as guest- speakers or other areas of expertise

Here ’ s to a great year!
