Disability Access Services (DAS) January 2015

Students Served by Disability Access Services Prevalence of Disability Over 900 DAS students in :30 = Ratio of DAS to OSU total enrollment

DAS Registration Process Students register with DAS through our Online Services and submit documentation of a disability. DAS determines accommodations based on appropriate documentation from a qualified professional. Students participate in an orientation with a DAS advisor

What are Reasonable Accommodations? Accommodations provide equal access, not special treatment or an unfair advantage Once accommodations are determined, we (OSU, DAS, Faculty, instructors) are all legally responsible for their implementation Students play an active role in self-advocating and managing their accommodations; this is a learned process

Process for Receiving Accommodations

Accommodations Accommodations are individually determined and may include:  Priority Registration  Alternative Testing  Notetaking  E-text/Accessible Formats  Classroom Access  Sign Language Interpreters  Real Time Transcribing  Lab Assistants  Flexibility with Attendance or Assignments  Service Animal/Assistance Animal  Temporary Injury

Possible Indicators To Listen For It always takes me so much longer to finish my homework than my friends I have to read things several times and still don’t know what I’ve read I can’t take more than 9 credits and be successful I’ve always struggled in school I’ve always had trouble sitting still I study for hours and know the information and then can’t show what I know on the test I never have enough time to finish my exam

What can DAS do for you? How can DAS support advisors? What other information would be helpful to know for working with students with disabilities? What additional training, resources or topics would be helpful to you? What ideas do you have for strengthening collaboration between DAS and academic advisors? What do you want DAS to know?
