Kalwaria – Wadowice

The Way of the Cross in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Within the confines of Socrates Comenius a group of students from our school visited Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and Wadowice – the places which are very important to us. The beginnings of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska sanctuary date back to 1600 when Mikolaj Zebrzydowski, the Governor of Cracow, erected the Christ Crucifixion chapel on Zarek mount. Later, he set in the erection stone for building the chapel consecrated as a church, the Christs Sepulchre Chapel, a small monastery with a church, and the Passion of Christ stations modelled on Jerusalem. After Mikolaj Zebrzydowskis death in 1620 the work was continued by his son, Jan Zebrzydowski, who built five further passion chapels. The next founder was Jans son, Michal Zebrzydowski. The monastery was enlarged by Magdalena Czrtoryska, the last founder of Kalwaria. KALWARIAN AVENUES Today Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a place of both the Passion of Christ worship and Marian devotion. The Passion of Christ worship shows itself in the service of Jesus Christs Avenues and in the Passion celebrations of the Holy week, whereas the Marian devotion in Our Ladys Avenues service, the Burial and Triumph of Our Ladys Procession, and in worshipping the miraculous image of Our Lady of Kalwaria, which has been here since Today Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a place of both the Passion of Christ worship and Marian devotion. KALWARIA ON THE UNESCO On 1st December 1999 the World Heritage Committee, UNESCO, had unanimously inscribed the Mannerist Architectural and Park landscape complex and Pilgrimage Park on the World Heritage List. The whole landscape characterizes with outstanding universal spiritual values which have been cultivated up to nowadays in a form of ever more increasing number of pilgrims coming to this remarkable Passion and Virgin Mary landscape sanctuary. Wadowice – Karol Wojtyłas native home The Family House of Karol Wojtyła, and nowadays, the Museum of John Paul II is located at 4 Koscielna Street. Emilia and Karol Wojtyła lived there after the World War I. The Museum includes the former Wojtyłas flat and the adjoining rooms on the first floor.
