Air Education and Training Command I n t e g r i t y - S e r v i c e - E x c e l l e n c e Replenishing the Combat Capability of America’s Air Force Initializing the FMS, checking RAIM, & loading GPS Approaches

GPS “How To” Briefing The following slides are a depiction of how to initialize the FMS, check RAIM on the ground, and load a GPS approach. Please refer to the 1T-1A-1, , and Vol 3 for more and detailed information.

Initialization When you first power up the jet and the FMS, this is the initial screen you will see…. 1) Look for the Current “Active Data Base” 2) Then select “POS INIT” 1 2

Initialization This is how the screen will display after initializing the FMS After reading page of the Dash 1, initialize the FMS by: 1)First select LSK 2 which will put the ICAO location in the scratch pad 2)Then select LSK 5 to place the location in the “SET POS” line 1 2

Initialization Then select “INDEX”

Initialization Then select “ROUTE MENU”

Initialization Then select “PILOT ROUTE LIST”

Initialization Ensure the “PILOT ROUTE LIST” loaded is current. You’ll find the current list on the top of the 86 th Ops Notes. The pilot route list is in alphabetical order (you may have to scroll using the “PREV” or “NEXT” buttons)

Initialization These few steps will initialize the FMS and get you on your way…You’ll learn how to load a flightplan in your FMT and your first few sorties – Get an IP Demo!! Next, lets load a GPS approach, check it IAW , and learn how to check the RAIM (Random Autonomous Integrity Monitoring)

Loading a GPS Approach The first step is to ensure the destination is loaded in the FMS. Let’s say today we are going to Midland (KMAF). Make sure that the ICAO identifier is loaded in the “DEST” in the “ACT FPLN” Then select the “DEP ARR” button to bring up the Departure/Arrival Index Page

Loading a GPS Approach Select LSK “ARR” next to KMAF on the “ACT FPLN”

Loading a GPS Approach Select the approach you want to fly. Today, we’ll go with the GPS to 16R. Select the LSK next to “GPS16R”

Loading a GPS Approach

Select the initial point you wish to start the approach from. Today, we’ll go to “ADAYA”. Select the LSK next to “ADAYA”

Loading a GPS Approach Here’s what the FMS will look like after the approach is loaded and executed. Notice “ADAYA” next to the LSK in the “TRANS”

Loading a GPS Approach Select the “LEGS” page and scroll to the GPS approach points. See the appropriate paragraphs from on the next pages. We now must compare the data based approach with the approach plate. Remember: Approaches are only to be flown when retrieved from the data base.

Loading a GPS Approach

Note the waypoints, altitudes, headings (within 5 degrees) and distances between the FMS and Approach plate (within 0.1 NM). Looks like we are good to shoot the approach…. The FMS will only do whole numbers while the plate gives down to the tenth. See 86FTS/ DOV and the AFSSA Memo for clarification.

Loading a GPS Approach Now that we have the approach loaded and checked with courses and distances, it’s time to check if RAIM will be available. There are two methods in the T-1 but the bottom line is the requirement:

Checking RAIM This is the method to check RAIM on the ground, prior to departure… 1) Select the “INDEX” page 2) Find and select the LSK next to “GPS CTL” 1 2

Checking RAIM Here is the page you will check to see if RAIM is available or not. Notice that KMAF is already selected as your destination from you Flight Plan Page.

Checking RAIM Because of the design of the T-1 FMS, if you are checking RAIM on the ground, you must deselect the satellites NOTAMed out and input an ETA. 1)Input the satellite to deselect, today it’s 25. 2)Put in your “ETA” for KMAF, 2000Z today, and the FMS will begin it’s work. Notice “REQ PENDING” line. 1 2

Checking RAIM If everything goes your way, you will have RAIM available!! The next step is to delete the satellite deselected and the ETA from the FMS. If you do not deselect, this could inhibit the automatic RAIM check the FMS accomplishes while in flight.

Checking RAIM Just use the “DELETE” button and the LSKs next to the “SAT DESELECT” and “ETA” (Just as if you were deleting a point from the flight plan).

Checking RAIM This is what your FMS GPS page should look like prior to departure.

Checking RAIM While in flight, the FMS will automatically check RAIM with your ETA that it calculates. This is what it will look like in flight when RAIM is available. Satellite deselection is NOT required in flight.

GPS “How To” Briefing You’ve initialized the FMS, loaded and checked a GPS approach, and checked the RAIM. Looks like you are ready to go fly!! If you have any questions about these procedures, find any IP and ask them!!! This briefing courtesy of Maj Roe and Capt Bucks.

FLY SMART!! FLY SAFE!!
