COORDINATE PLANE Math 7
What is the coordinate plane? The coordinate plane is formed when a horizontal number line (x-axis) and a vertical number line (y-axis) are joined in the middle. This middle point is called the origin.
What does it look like?
Quadrants Drawing the axes separates the coordinate plane into quadrants. The first quadrant (I) is located in the upper right. Then you go counter-clockwise to quadrant II, III, and IV.
Label the Quadrants and Axes
Ordered Pairs An ordered pair is a fancy name for a “point” (x,y) is the format for an ordered pair The x-coordinate is listed first and the y-coordinate is second
Graphing Ordered Pairs To graph ordered pairs, you go left or right from the origin (on the x-axis) to the x-coordinate first From the x-coordinate, you go up or down to the y-coordinate Place the point here and label it with the ordered pair.
Plot the points, label, and tell which quadrant they are in. (3,2) (5,1) (-3,4) (-7,3) (7,-5) (-4,-3) (3,-2) (-6,-4) (6,3)
Points that don’t lie in a quadrant (2,0) (-5,0) (-7,0) (6,0) (0,3) (0,-4) (0,-7) (0,5) If they don’t lie in a quadrant, where do they lie?
