ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: Students will be able to develop and maintain a budget. Students will make choices in their budget that will benefit them in the long run. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will be able to create and analyze a budget. The students will also be able to explain the choices they have made. Process/Skills: The students will manage their budget in an organized notebook and be able to share with their peers the ways in which they organized their budget. Values/Dispositions: The ability to manage a budget allows students to have a sense of responsibility which gains confidence in their lives and prepares them for skills they will utilize as adults.
ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: Teaching students about developing and effective budget is a life skill that students will utilize throughout their life. The earlier the students learn these skills the more success they will have at managing their money in the future. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 15.A.2b Describe how incomes reflect choices made about education and careers. 15.B.2a Identify factors that affect how consumers make their choices. 15.C.2b Identify and explain examples of competition in the economy. Logical/Mathematical
Logical/Mathematical Activity: The students will keep an online check registrar of all the money they spend and earn. Students should add up the money they have remaining after they make a purchase. Each day students will be given a new expense that they will have to keep track of in their registrar. Resource: Online registrar
Verbal/Linguistic
Verbal/Linguistic Activity: Students will be given choices each day of what they will spend their money on. The students will write down explanations of why they chose the option they did in their journals. The students will share their choices with the students at their table. Resource: Journals
Musical/Rhythmic
Musical/Rhythmic Activity: The students will watch the School House Rock clip, “$7.50 Once a Week.” This provides a musical and visual representation about how people have to watch their money and make sure they don’t run out before they get more. The students will write in their journals about some things they might buy with $7.50 or if they would save. Resources: YouTube Clip, projector, journalsYouTube Clip
Visual/Spatial
Visual/Spatial Activity: Students will navigate through a virtual spending game where they will be tasked with saving for a special item. The students will then go shopping for essentials where they will have to make choices between items and prices. Students should work in pairs in order to discuss the choices that are made. Body/Kinesthetic
Body/Kinesthetic Activity: Students will work together to open some sort of business in the school. Students will set up and execute a plan to gain money for themselves and the classroom to go to a trip to the movies at the end of the month. This project is active and will provide an engaging experience. Resources: This will depend on what the students decide as their business.
Interpersonal
Interpersonal Activity: The students will work together to form a class business. This will be an excellent opportunity for students to work together and learn different views and ideas that students will have. Resources: This will depend on what the students decide as their business.
Intrapersonal
Intrapersonal Activity: At the end of the unit, the students will reflect on what they have learned and how they will continue to use this material in the future. Resource: Journal
Naturalistic
Naturalistic Activity: The students will create graphic representations of the items that they will include in their budgets. They should include the prices and an illustration of the items they have chosen. Resource: Poster board, art supplies
