BIG Idea 18 th -century philosophers applied the scientific method to all human ideas and practices, especially politics. –Believed natural laws govern all human behavior. The Enlightenment By Sam Irving

Social Contract Theory People agree to give up some freedom in exchange for safety and order. My right to swing my fist ends where your face begins.

John Locke People are reasonable, moral, and have natural rights including life, liberty, and property. Limited government to protect natural rights or be overthrown.

Describe this government.

Thomas Hobbes Wrote “Leviathan” People are violent. Without powerful government, life would be “nasty, brutish, and short.”
