Stewardship is about establishing a discipline. Spiritual Disciplines are the means by which we align ourselves with God’s desires.

Effective stewardship requires the establishing of a discipline: money, environment, education, time, etc.

The Bible informs us really clearly that a key area of stewardship is how we use our money. Mt 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

God has given us a mechanism to develop this spiritual discipline: Tithing Lev 27:30 “ ‘A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. The tithe is 10% of one’s income/stuff

Mal 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

Tithing our money is a heart issue! Mt 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. It is an indicator of your spiritual temperature.

Tithing is where the conversation begins... as everything belongs to God. God wants your trust, he doesn’t need your money.

Tithing: What does it practically look like?

Work out average hours per week hours (ave) = $5, hours (ave) = $5,712 Total is $10,812. Divide by 52 weeks and take 10% = $20.80/week An easier option maybe to calculate that week’s, fortnight’s or month’s wages and pay 10% from that.

Nate Living Arrangements: At home Uni: none Employment: none Income: Youth Allowanace Other Costs: Going out, Entertainment How much to tithe? Calculate 10% of the Allowance ($230/fortnight) = $11.50/week If Nate gets a casual job, this will affect how much youth allowance he receives. He then will need to calculate his total weekly, fortnightly or monthly income and calculate 10% from this.

Weekly payment is $540/week Calculate 10% of that The tithe is $54.00/week If Sam has someone move in to the house to help with the rent, she will then have more money to enjoy life with

Jasmine and Josh Living Arrangements: Newly Married (2 incomes) Employment: Jasmine - full time teacher, Josh – Harvey Normans Income: Jasmine $42,000/year Josh ($22/hr; 12 – 25 hours a week) Other Costs: Mortgage, Utilities, Car Repayment, pet lizard (Frankie) How much to tithe? Calculate 10% of Jasmine’s income: $80/week Calculate an average for Josh’s income: $22/hr = $20,500 per year = $40/week Total tithe $120/week If Josh works weekends or nights that increase his casual rate then he will need to factor that into the calculation.
