Basic Mechanics By: Haley Barry

Is precision agriculture new technology?  Precision Agriculture is bot old and new. The old portion can be traced back to the Native Americans adding fish to the hills of corn to improve production. The new portion is the advent of the Global Positioning System, geographic information system, yield monitoring and other technology. This E-Unit is about these new scientific development in agriculture.

How is precision agriculture useful in modern times?  The Global Positioning System is used to locate an exact point in a field. Precision agriculture has the potential to reduce cost by allowing farmers to apply inputs only where we need it. We can use high-grade computer software programs that can analyze data. Variable –rate technology allows equipment to change its rate of application automatically depending upon the exact location of the equipment. Site-specific crop management is developing system for agriculture management that incorporates variable-rate technology.

How much of the workforce is in agriculture and agriculture-related business?  Current estimates suggest that 20 to 25% of the workforce is employed in some aspect of agriculture or agriculture-related business.

Summarize the skills needed, responsibilities, pay and educated need in each career.  Entry-Level Career- Need a high school graduation. They have the lowest level of responsibility. They often do not require problem solving or the development of new innovative ideas. Entry- level careers are not always low paying and can include variety

Technical-Level Career.  Technical-level Careers are generally associated with completion of an associates degree from a technical school program. Technical level careers usually offer a higher wages, more security and increased responsibility and may require more problem-solving skills. Besides having skills in technology many in technical-level careers display in people skills in training and management

Professional-Level Career.  Need a 4 year college degree or more. Professional-level employment may offer higher wages, increased levels of responsibility, greater challenges for problem solving. Some careers require a bachelor’s degree or higher because of the responsibility associated with the position.
