A CID D EPOSITION Made by: Adriana Chacón Carmen Araujo

A CIDITY Acids are chemicals that are able to donate a hydrogen ion to other chemicals JXyhe2Tk&feature=related

A CID D EPOSITION Is the general term for acid coming down to the Earth’s surface from the air Wet deposition- the acid comes down in the form of rain or snow Dry deposition- the acid comes down as gas or dry particles, without water

M AIN P OLLUTANTS & S OURCES

A CID DEPOSITION AND ITS EFFECTS Human construction Limestone buildings and statues dissolve because of the acid.

E FFECT ON CONIFEROUS FORESTS 1970s: Germany’s Black Forest was damaged. All kinds of trees suffered physical damage. Loss of chlorophyll, lesions and thinning of wax cuticles. Availability of nutrients reduces growth even more. Reduces availability of soil particles therefore nutrients are also not available. Root hair damaged Damage of trees can kill them

E FFECT ON FISH & OTHER AQUATIC ORGANISMS Aluminum released from soil ends up in the streams and rivers. Fish’s ability to regulate amount of salt and water in its body, affects intake of oxygen and salt. This may lead to death of fish. A solid can form on the fish’s gills, causes suffocation. No longer breathe.

E FFECTS ON SOIL FERTILITY THROUGH NUTRIENT REMOVAL Reducing ability of soil particles to hold on to nutrients. Nutrients: calcium, magnesium and potassium ions.
