WatSan in the Americas. Background The Strategy ‘Water and Sanitation in the Americas – a way forward’ (March 2004) was developed. Roles of IFRC in the WatSan Sector in the Americas: Disaster Response: PADRU provides an effective platform for WatSan disaster response providing guidance and training to NS staff and volunteers in WatSan disaster assessment, coordination and deployment. Post-disaster WatSan: These initiatives are coordinated and supported from NS partners either bi-laterally and/or from the Federation Regional Delegations (Lima & Panama).

2005: New approach for the WatSan Sector in the Americas A WatSan / DM delegate from PADRU based in Lima. Development of the manual ‘based manual for the prevention of disaster in rural water schemes systems’ was developed as part of the IFRC Community VCA Tool Kit. Development of the document ‘The challenge in disaster reduction for the water and sanitation sector: improving quality of life by reducing vulnerabilities’ was developed. NOTE: This will be lunched in the 4WWW in Mexico by PAHO/IFRC during the presentation of the panel “The Sustainability of Water and Sanitation Services in the Context of Disaster Risk Reduction. A contribution towards the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action "”. 21th of March. 11:00 h. Diezmo Room.
