13 APRIL 15 Training Day

The History of Academies 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 2 First academies established under the Blair Government in 2000 These first academies were focussed on poorly performing schools Critics argued that these early academies were about ‘getting better students’

Convertor Academies 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 3 In 2010, for the first time, successful schools could ‘apply’ to become academies; these are known as ‘Convertor Academies’ At the same time we observed the rise of ‘Sponsored Academies’ these were often, although not exclusively, schools who were ‘forced’ to become academies due to low standards In the last 5 years we have seen the continued growth of academy chains; some of these have been the centre of controversy

The Changing Educational Landscape 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 4 We cannot ignore irreversible change Our values remain but the way of protecting them is different In 2010 it was inconceivable that Exeter House would become an academy

Convertor Academies 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 5 Many successful schools convert post 2010 Some convertor academies use their new status to rebrand the school Some do not value their current staff team and impose new terms and conditions Some convertor academies start building ‘mini-empires’ including sponsoring under-performing schools

Somerset Road Education Trust (SRET) 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 6 We are a different type of Multi-Academy Trust We have different values and aspirations for the future The fact that you won’t have noticed much change indicates that we are a child orientated organisation We are now masters of our own destiny; we have more freedom to shape the future as we see it Our vision is based on a moral imperative, not building a new empire

SRET 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 7 Together we are stronger We will go on to achieve great things because we have a resource of 200 staff with incredible potential to impact on the 750 young people in our care Our challenge is to achieve more together than we would as single entities

Building Trust 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 8 The most successful organisations are those of ‘high trust’ Low trust countries include USA, UK and Portugal High trust societies include Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland Giving trust results in improved outcomes

Building Trust 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 9 Building Trust underpins the future success of SRET In several European towns accidents fell when traffic signs etc. were removed In Kensington this approach has been trialled with a 60% reduction in road traffic accidents When you give people more trust they take their responsibility seriously Greater trust leads to innovation and calculated risk taking

Trust and the Impact in Schools 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 10 Research demonstrates a high correlation between the level of trust in schools and their ability to improve SRET has a unique opportunity to build high quality, trusting relationships between individuals and schools

The Evolving Vision 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 11 Learning is accessible, fun and inspiring Everyone is encouraged to be the best they can be Innovative – cutting edge So good everyone wants to stay A great curriculum A unique and supportive family

The Evolving Vision 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 12 A centre of excellence Ambitious Supportive/Collaborative Efficient Enabling staff learning/CPD Best use of resources –economies of scale Wider employment opportunities

The Evolving Vision 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 13 Child-Centred Enabling children to enjoy learning Belonging –Sense of Shared Identity Parents feel supported Serving our Children

Strapline 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 14 Inclusion, Innovation, Excellence

The Vision 13/04/2015 SRET Logo 15 ‘SRET is a unique, supportive family of three schools where learning is accessible, fun and life-long and where the teaching is always inspirational. It is a place where everyone is encouraged to always be the best they can.’
