Instructional Sketchbook – ISketch Plan III Author: Sunnie Li October 19, 2004

Motivation A lot of research have been focused on beautification of shapes –E.g. SmoothTeddy Image Guided 3D Sketching Yet most fine art people still prefer traditional pencil-paper tools to practice –Smoothing lines is not enough –Shadows are what really matters to make the picture look real

Goal Targeted user: people with interests in fine arts, especially students A pen-based sketchbook that guides users to shadow/color the picture To let people have a better sense when they observe the difference between the real objects and pictures

Overall Design More about how to teach the user to draw, while maintaining a certain degree of automation

Functionalities Scaling –Users may choose to shut off the option by drawing a “#” symbol at the selection circle Start shadowing

Functionalities (cont’d) Scaling Functionalities (cont’d) Scaling Start shadowing Division between light and dark Blending Reflection Lighter Shadow Darker Shadow Darker Area

Functionalities (cont’d) Shadow instructions are implemented as following –Capture the image of the actual object/person with a digital camera –Obtain data from the image –Suggestions/guides

Tools

Challenges Time delay between consecutive gestures Allowance of customized commands How to use data from the captured image to provide best suggestions –How to show the user where to shadow with what colors (i.e. how dark it should be) Gesture latency will increase and more confusions from users with growing set of tools
