Animal Adaptations

How do animals meet their needs? An animal’s physical properties helps it to survive. An animal’s physical properties helps it to survive. Can you list a variety of ways animals are adapted? Can you list a variety of ways animals are adapted?

Why is adaptation necessary? SURVIVAL! Protection Protection From Predators From Predators Against weather conditions/climate Against weather conditions/climate From Surrounding area From Surrounding area Get food Get food Bodies are structured to live and eat what is in that environment/habitat Bodies are structured to live and eat what is in that environment/habitat

Is adaptation a learned behavior or an inherited trait? Both! An animal is An animal is structured to fit in its habitat and fulfill its basic needs! Some animals learn how to survive from other animals in its species. Some animals learn how to survive from other animals in its species.

Meeting Basic Needs Some animals do not need to be in groups to survive and live in isolation some of the time. Some animals do not need to be in groups to survive and live in isolation some of the time. What animals do you know of that live alone for periods of time? What animals do you know of that live alone for periods of time?

Meeting Basic Needs Other animals need and depend on other animals in its species for survival. Other animals need and depend on other animals in its species for survival. What animals do you know of that live in groups? Why? How does this help? What animals do you know of that live in groups? Why? How does this help?

Back to our original question; For the following slide write in your notebooks the answer to theses questions. What are animal adaptations? What are animal adaptations? How do these adaptations help animals to survive in their environment. How do these adaptations help animals to survive in their environment.

Hippopotamus

Fish

Alligator

Orangutan

On Your Own 1. Think of an animal. 2. What are two adaptations for that animal? See if you can name one inherit adaptation and one learned behavior for adaptation. 3. Tell how the two adaptations allow the animal to survive.
