Map of Europe Pre-Balkanizaton Check out Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia 1946 new constitution organized Yugoslavia into six republics: Bosnia & Herzegovina Croatia Macedonia Montenegro Serbia Slovenia

War in Bosnia 1992 Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence Serbs launched a war to stop the independence Serbs used ETHNIC CLEANSING to rid Bosnia of its Muslims and Croats

War in Kosovo Serbs used ETHNIC CLEANSING to rid Kosovo of its Albanian population NATO bombed Serbia to force them to stop the violence; Serbia withdrew.

Future of the Balkans Ethnic loyalties = tension War = refugees and poverty Some republics still want independence

Cleaning up Europe Pollution spreads!! Nations must work together! European Environmental Agency provides the EU with reliable information about the environment

Water Problems Poland until 1990, 44% of cities had no sewage treatment plants = unsafe water Fertilizers = too much algae and plants; kills fish Oil Spills = kills thousands of birds and ocean life These fish were killed as a result of living in polluted water.

Air Pollution Fossil Fuels = smog and ozone problems Polluted air = respiratory diseases, lung cancer and acid rain

THE EU After WWII Europe began to unify to improve their economies, EU established. Eastern European countries are less prosperous because they were once communist countries under Russia. But these countries offer new trade, more people, and a united continent.
