The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Presented by: Ms. Marshall

Teleplay A teleplay is a script for a television movie or program. The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is an actual episode of a science fiction series called The Twilight Zone.

Symbol A symbol is something that stands for something else. Maple Street symbolizes streets everywhere, suggesting that people everywhere can behave like the Maple Street residents. Try to identify other examples of symbolism as we read the teleplay.

Complications Complications are meant to increase our anxiety about how the story will finally end.

Inference An inference is an educated guess, a conclusion that makes sense because it’s supported by evidence. As you are reading the story, you will stop and make inferences when you see the inference symbol.

Now, let us pause to review the vocabulary and complete a vocabulary activity.

Vocabulary Tell about a time you were transfixed by something on television. Mutter a phrase that is not intelligible. Write a sentence that includes the words assent and variations. Describe something tremendous that intimidated a child. Describe an idiosyncrasy of someone you know.

Vocabulary Tell about something that is a menace to society. Draw a picture of coyotes converging on their prey. Give an explicit direction.

Teleplay Terms Teleplay Screenplay Fade In Pan Fade to Black Cut to Outside Shot Long Shot Close-up Opening Shot Dissolve

Now let’s Read the Story!

Storyboard Activity Now that we have read the story, you will create a storyboard to show that you comprehended the story. You will draw boxes on a sheet of white paper to depict the major events in the story. Under each picture, you will include a piece of dialogue that will serve as a caption.
