SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Sustainable Development refers to people taking resources from nature with minimal disturbance to the environment. Sustainable development provides people with resources needed today without threatening resources need for the future.

Sustainable development thus means: 1.Resources can be used over and over. 2.Not just resources are preserved but so are people’s jobs. Thus employment also has to do with sustainability.

Activity: Venn Diagram 1.Read the pink EVIDENCE STATEMENTS (showing the impacts of deforestation) and organize in the correct category of the venn diagram. 2.Identify which EVIDENCE is FOR (+) and AGAINST (-) deforestation. 3.Decide whether current deforestation practices are sustainable. Explain why or why not using the EVIDENCE STATEMENTS to support your answer. – If sustainable: What EVIDENCE shows benefits to people, profit, and planet. – If unsustainable: What EVIDENCE must be addressed to improve sustainability and reduce negative impacts to people, profit, and/or planet.
