 Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day.  His reputation grew to what it is today during the 19th century.  In the 20th century, Shakespeare's work was rediscovered by new movements in performance.  His plays are still very popular today and are studied, and performed, in cultural and political contexts throughout the world.

 William Shakespeare’s work consists of 39 plays, including a few collaborations with other playwrights.

 William Shakespeare is best known today for his plays.  Shakespeare wrote two long poems: Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece  The poems were published, in 1593 and 1594.

 Our modern life and culture is filled with the words from William Shakespeare  For example: Hamlet’s “To be, or not to be,”  He apparently even created some words, such as:  “boisterous”  “cudgel”  “peevish.”

 Shakespeare also wrote many sonnets in his time. Whether or not they were meant to be published is unknown.  The 154 sonnets were published in  Shakespeare’s famous sonnets include:  The Young Man  The Dark lady
