A non-renewable energy source. Fossil Fuels A non-renewable energy source.
Energy Energy is the ability to do work. Ex. You need “energy” to wake up in the morning, you need “energy” to play sports. In these scenarios, where do you get your energy from?
Energy Flows Just like mass, energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Instead, energy flows from one thing to the next. Ex. Sun’s energy helps to grow food You eat the food & get its energy You grow, move and exert energy
Energy in Everyday Life We use energy to generate (make) electricity and power our vehicles.
Energy Sources An energy source is where we get energy from. There are 2 types: Renewable: Can be reused/replaced Nonrenewable: Cannot be reused Which of these two will we run out of eventually? Nonrenewable
Renewable or nonrenewable? Trees Animal Waste Sunlight Natural Gas Waves Wind Coal Oil
Renewable or nonrenewable? Trees - renewable Animal Waste - renewable Sunlight – renewable Natural Gas - nonrenewable Waves – renewable Wind - renewable Coal – nonrenewable Oil - nonrenewable
Most of our energy comes from non-renewable sources Most common non-renewable energy sources are called Fossil Fuels. Formed from “fossils,” or once living organisms in swamps 3 Types of Fossil Fuels: Coal Oil Natural Gas
Fossil Fuels Pros (+) Cons (-) Cheap Burn easily Produce lots of heat Hurt the environment with pollution Non-renewable (We will run out!) Releases CO2 into the air
Coal Formed from buried and decayed plants over millions of years Heat & Pressure make different types of coal Positives: Very cheap and abundant (lots available)
How do we obtain (get) coal? Surface Mining: Destroys landscapes Deep Underground Mining Damaging to miner’s lungs
Natural gas Formed from the remains of tiny sea animals and plants from thousands of years ago Gas gets trapped in rock Main ingredient is CH4 (methane)
How to remove natural gas? Wells use pressure and heat to push natural gas to the surface. Usually found in the ocean, and has to be brought to land by ship.
Natural Gas Cleaner than coal The US has access to a lot of it Provides a lot of energy when burned BUT… we will run out of it in about 50 years (using it up too quickly)
Oil Used to make gasoline and other fuels Also has to be pumped to the surface like natural gas Produced greenhouse gases – air pollution!
Oil Spills Oil has to be transported from the ocean to land, so they use pipelines. When these pipes break, the oil is spilled into the ocean, causing huge disasters.
