MATTER
True/False Quiz Matter must have mass Matter must take up space Air is matter Matter can be in different shapes Matter can exist in 3 states
What is matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space Examples? How can we describe an object made of matter? Is air matter? Gas? (yes)
Physical Properties Characteristics of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance into something else They help us identify different types of objects Examples? color, taste, height, weight, boiling point, melting point
Physical Properties Mass: amount of matter in an object Measured in grams Weight: measure of the pull of gravity on an object Measured in newtons Volume: amount of space that an object takes up Can be measured using a graduated cylinder Can be calculated (Length x Width x Height) Density: the concentration of matter in an object Can be calculated (mass ÷ volume) Solubility: ability to be dissolved Would your mass change if you went to the moon? (no) Would your weight change if you went to moon? (yes) So mass and weight both depend on the amount of matter in an object, but weight also depends on the pull of gravity
Three States of Matter Solid: has definite shape & definite volume Liquid: has definite volume, but no definite shape Gas: no definite shape or volume Solid- feels firm b/c the particles are packed so tightly together Liquid- particles move more freely, so a liquid can change shape (flow and take the shape of its container) Gas- particles are farthest apart and freer to move around, can also take the shape of its container
Changes Between States Freezing: liquid solid Melting: solid liquid Boiling: liquid gas Occur when heat is added or removed Do not change a substance (water is still water)
Physical & Chemical Changes in Matter Physical changes: no new substances are formed Changes in state Chemical changes: One or more new substances are formed Also called chemical reactions *Matter is neither produced nor destroyed during these changes Physical change example- ice melts into liquid water; liquid water boils and changes into water vapor (it’s still water) Chemical reaction example- burning (when charcoal is burned carbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide)

What is Sublimation? This is when a solid changes directly into a gas. Watch and see!
