Towering Towers Day 3

Warm UP:  Take a set of 5 stickies  Add your stickies to the posters around the room—putting one stickie in a square  When you are done sit down and look around at the posters  Write some things you notice on a whiteboard.

Behavior Target:  What can I do to communicate and work effectively within a team or group?

Towering Towers

 You should select one pattern block for each letter in your first and last name. Select the appropriate number of pattern blocks based on the criteria on your sheet.

Build a Tower  Build an individual tower with your own pieces. You will have 10 minutes. Your goal is to get the maximum height with a free-standing tower. Record the height before your tower falls!  Compare your individual tower with your group towers(s). What can you say about the different towers?

Group Towers  Dismantle your individual tower and place your blocks in front of you.  Group building guidelines:  Each group member must place their own blocks  Blocks from all group members must be used  Measured towers must be free standing

Building  You will have 15 minutes to construct the tallest, free-standing tower possible.  The teacher must verify the height of the tower if you want it recorded.  If your tower collapses, blocks should be retrieved by the group member that placed them.  If the group decides to start over from scratch, each group member must start with their original blocks.

Reflection: 1. What does it mean to be part of a team? 2. What would you do differently if your group had the opportunity for one more round of tower building? Do you think you could build a taller tower? Why or why not? 3. Describe some new construction strategies you learned from talking to classmates. 4. What did you learn from this activity that is directly related to math? 5. What did you learn from this activity that has nothing to do with math?
