The Stages of Matter Solid Liquid Gas

Solids Particles in a solid are tightly packed together in a regular pattern The particles vibrate but do not move from place to place A solid maintains its shape

Liquids Particles of a liquid are close together but do not have a regular pattern These particles vibrate, move about and slide past each other A liquid takes the shape of it’s container

Gas The particles of a gas are far apart with no pattern These particles vibrate and move freely at high speeds A gas takes the shape of its container and can change volume

States of Matter (write this down) Solid - The molecules of a solid are tightly packed and do not move very far. A solid holds it’s shape. Liquid - The molecules of a liquid are close together but move around a lot. A liquid takes the shape of its’ container. Gas - The molecules of a gas are far apart and move quickly. A gas takes the shape of it’s container and expands or shrinks to fill its container.

The Addition Of Heat Solid Liquid Gas (Ice) (Water) (Steam)

Changing from State to State With the addition or removal of heat, one substance can be either a solid a liquid or a gas melting freezing condensation evaporation

Changing from a solid to a liquid Melting Changing from a solid to a liquid (+ heat)

Changing from a liquid to a solid Freezing Changing from a liquid to a solid (- heat)

Changing from a liquid to a gas Evaporation Changing from a liquid to a gas (+ heat)
