AFTER ALL, WE HAVE TO TEACH USING THE CCSS….RIGHT?? BUT….  “The Standards define what all students are expected to know and be able to do, not how teachers should teach. For instance, the use of play with young children is not specified by the Standards, but it is welcome as a valuable activity in its own right and as a way to help students meet the expectations in this document… The Standards must therefore be complemented by a well-developed, content-rich curriculum consistent with the expectations laid out in this document.” (p. 6 ELA CCSS)

CORE CURRICULUM IS A SHIFT IN FOCUS FROM PRODUCT TO PROCESS ARTS INTEGRATION PROVIDES “ACCESS POINTS” IN LEARNING THAT PROVIDES REVELANCE TO THE STUDENTS’ CULTURAL, SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL AND INTELLECTUAL NEEDS.  PROCESS+RELEVANCE=UNDERSTANDING

THE COLLEGE BOARD DID A RESEARCH OF THE COMMON CORE AND PROVIDED SOME INTERESTING INSIGHTS Arts References in the Common Core:  If the definition of text may be expanded to include non- print texts, such as works of dance, media arts, music, or theatre…  then all of the standards in this category (Reading) - at every grade level - can connect directly to arts-based content or investigation.

Reading a work of drama: referenced in 26 standards at all grade levels RL.5.3: Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact.) Comparing the same work in different media: referenced in 12 standards RL.6.7: Compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text, including contrasting what they “see” and “hear” when reading the text to what they perceive when they listen or watch.

Analyzing and interpreting images: referenced in 17 standards Using songs in instruction: referenced one time, at the second-grade level  RL.K.7: With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the text in which they appear.  RL.2.4: Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.

ARTS REFERENCES IN COMMON CORE STANDARDS FOR WRITING Eight arts links in 110 standards Visual art/drawing links found in the standards for the lower grades  W.K.2: Use a combination of drawing, writing, and dictating to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic. Media Arts/multimedia links:  W.8.2.a: Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information into broader categories; include formatting, graphics (e.g., charts, tables) and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.

THE NATIONAL CORE ARTS STANDARDS CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK IS CURRENTLY IN THE FINAL PHASE OF ADOPTION  They include elements such as Philosophy and Lifelong Goals as well as the Creative Processes including Imagine, Investigate, Construct, and Reflect.

LOOKING AT THE STANDARDS USING A BUILDING ANALOGY Standards are like the building code Curriculum is like the blueprint Teaching strategies are the tools…for example the engineering process or Thinking Maps or AI

THIS WEEK AS WE EXPLORE THE ARTS  We are exploring the tools used to build the final product….your lesson plans and ultimately the student evidence of learning.

YOUR TASK  In triads, examine the three lesson plans you have been given.  Discuss and determine which lesson is a non-arts integrated lesson, which one is an arts integrated lesson, and which one is a CCSS and arts integrated lesson.  Be prepared to share your insights with the group.

FINALLY  When studying a piece of art, composition, drama, or dance one must be able to analyze the components that create the whole.  Additionally, the ability to synthesize parts into a whole work is critical to making meaning for each audience member.  “Common Core Standards have identified the need for critical practice that many teachers are struggling with implementing in the classroom.
