To the northwest and north of Beijing, a huge, serrated wall zigzags it’s way to the east and west along the undulating mountains. This is the Great Wall, which is said to be visible from the moon. The Great Wall of China is the longest wall ever built. It goes around mountains, hills, and deserts. Chinese started making the Great Wall over 2,000 years ago to protect China from invaders. It took hundreds of years to build. People who built it were prisoners, soldiers, civilians, and farmers. The Great Wall is more than 6,000 kilometers long and 26 feet tall. It’s even wide enough to drive on it with a car. Today the Great Wall is the only thing that you can see from outer space.
