Communicating Understanding and Building New Ideas Online Discussions Builds connections and class community by promoting discussion on course topics and more informal discussion Contributes to the development of cognitive, critical thinking, and writing skills Allows time for thoughtful, in-depth reflection on course topics. Much like traditional writing exercises, students have more time to think about, research, and compose their thoughts before contributing to the discussion. Facilitates exploratory learning by allowing students to review and respond to the work of others and approach learning in diverse ways Empowers students to express themselves. For students with different learning styles, an online discussion board can be a venue where they feel more comfortable contributing to group discussions. With positive reinforcement from interactions on the discussion board, an increase in in-class participation may also occur. Options for Online Discussions: Canvas – Kidblog –

SharePoint Ferndale School District also has a SharePoint site where teachers and students can store documents that they can share with other teachers and/or students. When you log into the SharePoint site you can log in using the same username and password as you do to get into your computer.

Class Notebooks The OneNote Class Notebook is an app for SharePoint Online that helps you set up OneNote in your class. This app will create a class notebook, which includes three types of sub-notebooks: Student Notebooks – private notebooks that are shared between each teacher and their individual students. Teachers can access these notebooks at any time, but students cannot see other students’ notebooks. Content Library – a notebook for teachers to share course materials with students. Teachers can add and edit its materials, but for students, the notebook is read-only. Collaboration Space – a notebook for all students and the teacher in the class to share, organize, and collaborate. Lets see it in Action
