Implementing Math Standards Webinar Secondary Powerful Conversations Network

Learning Target Review the Standards for Mathematical Practice and reflect on the implications for formative assessment

CCRS Implementation involves.. CONTENT STANDARDS STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

The Importance of Mathematical Practices What are the Standards for Mathematical Practice, and why are they important for mathematical proficiency? The 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice – place an emphasis on student demonstrations of learning……..

Daily… how do your students experience the learning of mathematics? How do you know?

Mathematical Task

Six Planning Questions 1. Is the problem interesting to students? 2. Does the problem involve meaningful mathematics? 3. Does the problem provide an opportunity for students to apply and extend mathematics? 4. Is the problem challenging for students? 5. Does the problem support the use of multiple strategies? 6. Will students' interactions with the problem reveal information about students' mathematics understanding?

“Asking a student to understand something means asking a teacher to assess whether the student has understood it. But what does mathematical understanding look like? One hallmark of mathematical understanding is the ability to justify, in a way appropriate to the student’s mathematical maturity, why a particular mathematical statement is true or where a mathematical rule comes from”(Common Core Standards Initiative [CCSSI]), 2010, p. 4).
