Iran Notice Iran’s neighbors: –Iraq to the west –Afghanistan to the east –It also borders the Persian Gulf Textbook page 451 and Burrito Book page 3

Iran’s flag Iran became a country in Relations with the United States were good until the 1970s. Then in 1978 a revolution began in Iran. Relations have been strained with our country ever since.

Shia Muslims Read “People and Culture” on page 451. Iran About 90% of Iranians are Shia Muslims. Shia Muslims believe that true interpretation of Islamic teaching can only come from certain religious and political leaders.

Theocracy Read “Economy and Government” pg.452. Iran is a theocracy: a government ruled by religious leaders Ayatollahs are the religious leaders. The supreme leader is head of the Ayatollahs and has unlimited power.

Iran’s government Iran also has an elected President. In 2005 Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became president. He wants Iranians to follow strict Islamic law. The United States and many other countries are worried about his nuclear ambitions.

Theocracy vs. the US Constitution The US Constitution: 1 st Amendment –“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,…..” –(what that means – Congress will not make a law forcing anyone to follow a religion; nor will they make a law preventing you from following any religion.) Why did our Founding Fathers place that in our Constitution? 1.The 1 st Amendment (freedom of religion) is in our Constitution because….
