CHEM 198 SENIOR RESEARCH Requirements and Tips for a Successful Semester

Handouts/Sign Up ► Course Syllabus ► Proposal Presentation + Final Project Venue Sign Up Sheet

Course Materials ► I plan to add a Chem 198 website linked to my faculty website ► This should have links to the seminar schedule and to handouts

C198 – Senior Thesis Overview ► Two Parts to Class  Research Work  All Other Requirements ► Research Work Requirements  Mostly between you and your advisor  Grade from your advisor provided you meet all the other requirements  Time Split: about 1 unit of work to fullfill “Other” requirements, so research work should be equivalent to 2 units (typically 6 hours, but your advisor is the judge)

Non- Research Requirements ► Attend Chem 198 Meetings  Today’s  Proposal Presentations (1 or 2 days)  Pre-Final Presentation Meeting (Tentatively Scheduled for Nov. 21)  Final Presentation (Graduation Event/Poster Session OR December 5 th afternoon Event)

Non- Research Requirements ► Seminar Attendance  Need to attend a minimum of 5 Chem. Dept. seminars  These meet Fridays, 1 to 2 PM in Sequoia 338  The topics and speakers will be posted  Should be present for FULL SEMINAR  You get credit for attending, only if you sign in to the attendance notebook and put down Chem 198  Need to be respectful during seminar (no cell phone use during seminar)

Non- Research Requirements – cont. ► Project Proposal Presentation  2 Dates available: Sept. 26 th and Oct. 3 rd (but if 7 or fewer students, we could do all on one date)  5 to 10 min. presentation  Include: ► research objectives ► Background on why the objectives are important and what related work has been done previously ► Planned Work ► Preliminary Results

Non- Research Requirements – cont. ► Hints on Presentation  Talk to your advisor about the presentation  Get draft to advisor about 1 week before presentation  Plan on ~1 minute per slide, but practice to see time needed  Keep text to a minimum  Use Powerpoint to prepare slides

Non- Research Requirements – cont. Presentation Textual vs. Graphical ► Studies of interpersonal communications show that:  55% comes from facial expressions and body language  38% comes from vocal quality or tone of voice  7% comes from content, the actual meaning of the words From “Scientifically Speaking”, The Oceanography Society

Non- Research Requirements – cont. ► Project Proposal Presentation – go to example presentation by Matt Padilla

Non- Research Requirements – cont. ► Final Presentation  We need to decide on venue  If dedicated date, can do either poster or oral presentation  If part of Graduation Event, will only be poster session  We will Meet on Nov. 21 to go over how to prepare for the Final Presentation

Non- Research Requirements – cont. ► Final Project Paper  Need to consult with your advisor as to the format  For my students, I start with the grade submission date and work backwards ► e.g. if grades due Jan. 2, final form of paper due Dec. 19 th, and completed draft version due Dec. 12 th
