WEEK 6 Mihrican YIGIT

ARGUMENTATIVE/PERSUASIVE ??? An essay which is based on discussion On the other hand, persuasive/persuade means convincing the reader about the topic. Therefore, your target is to change the reader’s mind and make him/her support your opinion.

BEFORE YOU START WRITING BRAINSTORMING; HAVE A POSITION; either agree or disagree/ either black or white; no gray have DOUBLE LIST that includes your arguments and counterarguments (opposite ideas); My arguments Counterarguments …………………… ………………………… ……………………...………………………. … ………………………… …………………… …………………………

FOR EXAMPLE, My arguments Counterarguments Cause expensive medical problems * cheap High in calories *offer salads as a choice Salt raises blood pressure * salty food tastes good Easy to eat too often * convenient “FAST FOOD IS BAD FOR YOU.” AGREE DOUBLE LIST

INTRODUCTION  THE USUAL INTRODUCTION which includes HOOK,BACKGROUND INFORMATION, and THESIS STATEMENT;  The only difference is the THESIS STATEMENT; it shouldinclude your TOPIC and OPINION.  It should be implied thesis statement, so there is no need to write your three arguments.

HOW TO WRITE THESIS STATEMENT It is clear that…(S+V) It is obvious that…(S+V) It seems that … …(S+V) It is supported by many people that…(S+V) It seems to be a good idea to (VERB) It doesn’t seem to be a good idea to (VERB) Many people agree that…(S+V) Many people strongly believe that…(S+V)  THE PHRASES THAT CAN BE USED TO HIGHLIGHT OPINION;

FOR EXAMPLE TOPIC: SHOULD STUDENTS WEAR UNFORM? Being a student requires obeying lots of ruleswhether you like or not. (HOOK) One of these rules is about the way you wear. If you are a student,you should wear some specific clothes in most ofthe countries all around the world. These specificclothes are uniforms. However, the necessity ofwearing uniform has been argued recently.(BACKGROUND INFORMATION). It seems that students shouldn't wear uniform. (THESISSTATEMENT; topic + opinion)

TRANSITIONS-PHRASES THAT CAN BE USED IN BODY PARAGRAPHS The usage of transitions depends on you, but to organize your arguments in an effective way, you should use transitions: 1 st BODY: First,…, First of all,… 2 nd BODY: *Second(ly), S+V,  *In addition, S+V  *In addition to +Noun or Noun phrase, S+V,  *Besides,S+V,  *Besides+ Noun or Noun phrase, S+V,  *Furthermore, S+V,  Moreover, S+V 3 rd BODY:  *Second(ly), S+V,  *In addition, S+V  *In addition to +Noun or Noun phrase, S+V,  *Besides,S+V,  *Besides+ Noun or Noun phrase, S+V,  *Furthermore, S+V,  Moreover, S+V

4THD BODY; THE PHRASES THAT CAN BE USED WHILE WRITING OPPOSITE IDEAS; Opponents of this idea claim that … Opponents of this idea maintain that … Those who disagree these ideas may say that … Those who disagree these ideas may assert that … Those who are against these ideas may say that … Those who are against these ideas may assert that … Some people may disagree with this idea. The put forward this idea because … They claim that … since … While Refuting; However, But/Yet On the other hand,

THE FIRST BODY First of all, uniforms will stop other students by being judged on how they look. For the children and teenagers you clothing style is very important. If you wear nice and different clothes everyday, they think that are rich. However, if you wear the same clothes everyday, they just “label” you as “poor”. Also, the children are really mean in terms judging their peers. They cannot understand that everybody has different financial conditions and some students may not afford to buy lots of different kind of clothes. However, they can find nothing to judge if they wear all the same school uniform. The price paid for the uniforms are the same in everywhere.

THE SECOND BODY In addition, uniforms will save families’ money. When the students wear different clothes, the families should spend too much money on clothes. However, they only buy the school uniforms if the students wear the same clothes. Also, only one uniform is sometimes enough for two or three years. For example, I have two brothers and they had the same weight and the height when they were in primary school, so when my elder brother graduated from primary school, my younger brother started to wear his uniform. Thanks to this situation, my father could save money and gave them extra pocket money to buy books and go to the cinema.

THE THIRD BODY Besides saving families’ money, uniforms will make it easier to identify those who are not from the school and therefore increase security/safety. Some people who have bad intentions may want to come to school and harm the students. If everybody wears the same clothes, we can easily recognize these people and stop them since not wearing uniform means you don’t belong to the school. However, if they wear whatever they want, we cannot identify these people and they may cause several problems. This is a good way to guard students and prevent the people harm the students.

THE FORTH BODY Opponents of this idea claim that no matter what the students dress in, they will always find a way to pass judgment upon their peers. However the most cruel way to judge some is to talk about his/her appearance. If they wear the same clothes, they cannot talk about the appearance. They also say that it is the students’ right to wear whatever they want. In every society, there should be an order, and you can supply this other with the rules. If you let the students free on this issue, numerous problems about discipline will occur. Therefore, it is not a right to wear whatever they want. Furthermore, they assert that school uniforms are not as comfortable as their own clothes. Today, the students are very lucky because the uniforms are designed according the students’ taste. A decade ago for example, girls weren’t used to wear trousers, or T-shirts, but now they can wear and they are as comfortable as their own clothes.

CONCLUSION It is the usual conclusion with the transition, restatement, summary and the closure. FOR EXAMPLE, Taking into account all the given opinions on wearing uniforms, It can be concluded that students should wear uniforms in order to comply with rules and to have equality between each other. It is way to organize the schools. People ought to decide whether students should wear the uniform or not, yet I think that wearing uniform is a good idea while others oppose the idea.

Being the Same or Different? Being a student requires obeying lots of rules whether you like or not. One of these rules is about the way you wear. If you are a student, you should wear some specific clothes in most of the countries all around the world. These specific clothes are uniforms. However, the necessity of wearing uniform has been argued recently. It seems that students shouldn't wear uniform. First of all, uniforms will stop other students by being judged on how they look.
