Animal Farm By George Orwell A Fairy Story

Setting The story takes place at Manor Farm in England. Later it is known as Animal Farm.

Main Characters Old Major – a boar who has a vision of a world ruled by animals. He represents Marx. Moses – a raven who represents organized religion Boxer – a horse who represents the common working class

Main Characters Snowball – a young boar who represents Leon Trotsky Benjamin – a cynical old donkey representing the intellects who refuse to get involved until too late Clover – an apathetic horse representing the working class who does not realize it’s being exploited due to laziness

Main Characters Mr. Jones - the drunk owner of Manor Farm. His mistreatment of the animals causes them to revolt. He represents Czar Nicholas II. Squealer – He is the smooth talking pig on the farm who manipulates language for propaganda like Russian newspapers did during the revolution. Napoleon – the leader of the animals after Snowball is chased off. He is powerful and corrupt and represents Joseph Stalin.

Main Problem/Conflict Old Major wants freedom of the animals from the rule of Mr. Jones and for the animals to live in harmony in a better life. Napoleon later fights his friend Snowball for power and misuses it.

Inciting Incident Mr. Jones gets drunk, forgets to feed the animals, and the animals revolt.

The Seven Commandments 1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy 2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend 3. No animal shall wear clothes 4. No animal shall sleep in a bed 5. No animal shall drink alcohol 6. No animal shall kill another animal 7. All animals are created equal

Suspense Two events that are especially suspenseful are The Battle of Cowshed and when Boxer dies.

Theme Power corrupts “Four legs good, two legs bad.”

Literary Elements Allegory - A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. Jesus used the similar parable frequently. Each event in the story Animal Farm parallels an event in the Russian Revolution.

The End “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.”
