Reactions of Ions in Solutions

Net Ionic Equations NaOHCuCl 2 Na + Cl - Cu +2 Cl - Dissolved in a solution the ionic compound breaks down into it’s ions

What is a net ionic equation? a way of representing a balanced chemical equation by writing only those ions (dissociated in solution) that actually participated in the reaction creating a solid precipitate. (usually double displacement reactions) The ions that didn’t actually react are called spectator ions and are cancelled out on both sides of the equation Spectator ions: ions that are not involved in a chemical reaction

Steps for writing net ionic equations 1. Write the balanced chemical equation with full chemical formulas for all reactants and products 2. Using the solubility information, such as the table you’ve already been provided, rewrite the formulas for all high solubility ionic compounds as dissociated ions, to show the total ionic equation

Steps for writing net ionic equations 3. Cancel out the spectator ions 4. Write the net ionic equation, reducing coefficients if necessary

I want to mix the two solutions, Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Copper (II) Chloride (CuCl 2 ). Overall Reaction 2NaOH (aq) + CuCl 2 (aq) ----> 2NaCl (aq) + Cu(OH) 2 (s) Precipitate Soluble insoluble

I want to mix the two solutions, Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Copper (II) Chloride (CuCl 2 ). Complete Ionic Reaction remove those spectators 2Na + +2OH - + Cu +2 +2Cl > 2Na + +2Cl - + Cu(OH) 2 (s) 2Na + +OH - + Cu +2 +2Cl > 2Na + +2Cl - + Cu(OH) 2 (s)

I want to mix the two solutions, Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Copper (II) Chloride (CuCl 2 ). Net Ionic Reaction 2OH - + Cu > Cu(OH) 2 (s)
