Evolutionary Theories

Theories of Evolution ACQUIRED LONGER NECK TO EAT FROM THE TALLER TREES STRETCHING STRETCHING AND this got passed to children! ORIGINAL

Let’s think about this… These are all ENVIRONMENTAL changes! You cannot pass down your environmental choices, only your GENETIC code! Where do you get your traits from? MOM and DAD So….. NO!!!! If your Mom decided to get a giant tattoo of a clown on her back, does that mean you will have a giant clown tattoo?!! NO!!!! If your Dad decides to become a body builder and goes to the gym for 10 hours a day, will he be able to pass his muscles onto you?!! Your Mom’s hair is brown, but she dyed it blonde. Will she be able to pass her new hair color on to you?!! NO!!!! Your Dad is a smoker and acquires lung cancer from smoking cigarettes for many years. Does that mean he can pass his lung cancer on to you?!!! NO!!!!

So if Lamarck’s theory wasn’t so great… NATURAL SELECTION VARIATION VARIATON HERITABLE

COMPETITION MORE COMPETE SURVIVE

NATURAL SELECTION FIT TRAITS PASS ON If the environment is SNOWY and COLD… White Fur Brown Fur Those that are more successful…. Makes it EASIER to hide from predators Makes it HARDER to hide from predators Get more FOOD Makes it EASIER to sneak up to catch prey Makes it HARDER to sneak up to catch prey Which makes them STRONGER Which attracts more FEMALES Which means more BABIES with THEIR GENES Future generations look more like the most “fit” organism

FITTEST NATURE SELECTED

Important Vocabulary… EVOLUTION MATE FERTILE VARIATION ADAPTATION

How would Darwin explain the Giraffes…? VARIATION Most with SHORTER necks Occasionally some with LONGER necks LONGER neck = easier time getting food COMPETITION Food = survival LONG NECK = BETTER TRAIT NATURAL SELECTION LONG Neck giraffes more successful in obtaining food and mates LONG neck gene is passed on because it is the more successful trait Future generations look more and more like the successful traits – LONG NECK giraffes

Practice EOC Question

Select 1 of the following activities: Activity 1: Pretend you are Charles Darwin. Write a letter to Lamarck explaining why your theory of evolution is the most logical. Be sure to include scientific evidence to support your claims. Your letter should be at least a page in length and free of errors. You may also use images to support your explanation. Activity 2: Select an adaptation of a plant or animal. Write a scenario explaining how the trait might have evolved according to Lamarck, then write a second scenario explaining the chosen adaptation using Darwin’s ideas. Use images to support your explanation. Your explanation must include all the key ideas of each theory. Must be one page in length and free of errors. Activity 3: Using the textbook and your notes, answer the following questions from the book. Answers questions in complete sentences, unless it is multiple choice. You will lose points if you fail to do so! All responses must be in your own words! Pg. 389: #11, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 25 Pg. 390: #28, 31, 34 Pg. 391: #1, 2, 9, 10
