Background March 2006: Ohio Leadership Advisory Committee (OLAC Development Framework) : Ohio Standards for Superintendents Fall 2008: SBOE adopts standards : Ohio Superintendent Evaluation System (OSES)

Ohio Superintendent Standards Provide Ohio with a full compliment of standards for educators Describes the role for new superintendents Can be used to inform content of preparation programs Can guide local boards of education

Ohio Superintendent Standards Five Standards: Vision, continuous improvement and focus of district work Communication and collaboration Policies and governance Instruction Resource management

Ohio Superintendent Evaluation System Focus boards of education on what is important in performance of superintendents Facilitate clear communication and expectations Identify evidence indicators up front Provide a tool for growth of the superintendent

Ohio Superintendent Evaluation System Developed collaboratively by Ohio superintendents and school board members Based on research Adaptable to the context of Ohio’s districts Supports the importance of ongoing assessment informed by multiple sources of evidence

Step One: Standards Based Job Description Develop or review key functions categorized around Ohio Standards for Superintendents Review sample job descriptions Consult Ohio Revised Code Ohio Superintendent Evaluation System Ohio Standards for Superintendents 1. Vision, Continuous Improvement and Focus of District Work: Superintendents establish a vision, expect continuous improvement, and develop a focused plan for achieving district goals. 2. Communication and Collaboration: Superintendents establish processes to communicate and collaborate effectively. 3. Policies and Governance: Superintendents work with the board of education to identify, prioritize and set policies and governance procedures that maximize the success of all students. 4. Instruction: Superintendents lead the creation of instructional systems designed for high student achievement. 5. Resources: Superintendent manage and organize the district’s resources (human, fiscal, operational and material) to accomplish district goals.
