Reading Rockets Sarah White

What is Reading Rockets? Reading Rockets is a nonprofit organization that aims to inspire parents and teachers to touch the life of a child and to teach them how to read or help those who are struggling.

What do they do? Reading Rockets uses different types of technology to help educate children on how to read and help those who are struggling. The program uses PBS programs, online website, programming, teleconferences, and free webcasts to help spread the information.

Main Source Reading Rockets website, is their main source of information to the public. This website includes information about books and authors in order to help make reading more enjoyable. Also, there are many articles and strategies that parents and teachers can use to help students learn how to read.

Great Information This website is not just for parents or helping one child learn how to read, but there is a great deal of information for teachers in the classroom. The website offers many articles on new strategies in the classroom and also products that can help all children learn not only how to read, but to also improve their skills.

Types of Information The articles include various information ranging from topics of how to teach a child to read to special education. They also inform the reader on the appropriate ways of helping a student to read as well as what to look for in their reading skills. There are also different activities provided by the website to help increase reading at home.

PBS Show There are different specials that PBS has broadcasted to help inform parents, teachers, and students about reading. Launching Young Readers is the first in a series that is devoted to exploring the different stages a child goes through when learning how to read.

PBS Show Continued Reading Rocks! Is a show that uses hip-hop music and goes through the path many children take when they are first struggling to read. Empowering Parents is reading rockets show of advice for parents who have children who are struggling with learning how to read.

PBS Show Cont’d Becoming Bilingual is the program where different bilingual schools are shown so that parents, teachers, and students can see the importance of learning another language as well as how difficult it is for ELL students. A Tale of Two Schools is a program that shows how some schools and students are having trouble with reading and what it would take to turn the schools around.

Has Reading Rockets Helped? Reading Rockets has won many awards including 2006 Parent’s Choice Silver Award for their help in providing information to everyone about learning how to read and teaching children how to read. They hope to continue this trend by making more programs to broadcast online and on PBS as well as offer more articles of advice and products. The website is in a very easy to use format and is offered in Spanish.
