 Everything in the world can be put into two categories:  Living things  Ex: Animals. Bacteria, insects  Non-living things  Ex: rocks, water, air

 Life science is the study of living things  Also known as Biology  Scientists who study living things are called biologists  Some of the fields can be broken down into specialized branches:  Ex: Zoology (study of animals), botany (study of plants)

 Depending on the field, they may work in different ways, but they share one thing in common: many biologists work in a lab at least part of the time  What might a biologist who studies genetics do?  A microbiologist?

 What do all living things have in common?

 Create a flow chart with the following information:  Living things have similarities and differences  The similarities include they consist of cells, have life activities, and use/require important chemicals  The differences include the 5 kingdoms

 All living things are made of cells  A cell is the basic unit of life  Most living things are made of many cells  Cells are found in all parts of animal  In animals they may up blood, bones, skin, nerves, and muscle  In plants they make up roots, stems, leaves and flowers

 Cells carry out many specialized functions:  Skin cells: cover and protect  Muscle cells: allow for movement  Bone cells: support and protect  Nerve cells: send and receive messages  Blood cells: transport material and fight disease

 Another word for living thing is organism  An organism is a complete, individual living thing  It can carry out all basic life activities  Bacteria are the simplest organism that can carry out all basic life activities

 Cells come in different sizes  Most cells are so small they are invisible to the unaided eye  In this case, they can only be seen with a microscope  A microscope is an instrument used to magnify small things

 When looking at cells under a microscope, more details can be seen  Size, shape, colors, etc.  Even parts of a cell can be seen  Organelles: stores material, produces energy

 Groups of cells that are alike and act together to do a certain job are called tissues  Ex: muscle tissue

 A organ is a group of different tissues that work together  Organs are the main working parts of animals and plants  Organs have specific jobs  Even plants have organs  The roots, leave and stems are organs

 Complete the Venn Diagram to Outline the similarities and differences of plant and animal cells  We will share the best Venn Diagram to post on our websites.  Use the Office program you feel most comfortable with to complete the activity  Word  PowerPoint  Publisher
