New Initiatives Meeting of the CIRA Fellows May 6, 2015 Christian Kummerow CIRA Director

Water Vapor, Clouds and Precipitation

Successful in a Sandy Supplemental proposal to produce a Hurricane-specific product from GPM and assimilate into HWRF Funding one student in Civil Engineering with Lynn Johnson/John Labadie. HMT will provide funding in subsequent years. Received funding to expand training of GPM data and products. Joined Riverside Technologies on successful proposal to forecast water availability Continue successful CloudSat data processing activity with NASA. Plan “Level 4” product as well as “Snow Verification” proposal to NASA GPM program call

Data Fusion Continue to use Task 1 funds to generalize CloudSat experience to combine data streams around CIRA themes (e.g. severe storms) with high scientific potential GOES-R is the next great opportunity to create composite Model/Multi-satellite product Group has been quite successful proposing to NOAA, NASA and NSF Received Hurricane Sandy Funds for cloudy radiance assimilation CIRA is organizing the 2015 JCSDA summer colloquium Internship program Level 4 data for GPM may serve as a prototype of other activities Data Assimilation

Using Satellite Data to Improve Models Working with High Impact Weather Prediction Project (HIWPP) but little funding. Have defined CIRA’s contribution as Water Vapor, Clouds and Precipitation. Porting into NOAA Earth Information System (NEIS) Using Task 1 funds to validate models (Todd Jones) and explore ways to bring satellite data to bear on model processes (Janice Bytheway). NASA Weather Focus area has very similar goals of improving process understanding that can lead to greater leverage of research.
