Skill: Synonyms  Words with similar meanings are called synonyms. You can often figure out the meaning of an unknown word by finding a clue in the words around it. Sometimes this clue is a synonym.

 Read the paragraph on the next slide. Notice how wounded helps you understand what injured means.

Dolphins are highly intelligent sea mammals. They cooperate with other fish and are able to skillfully communicate with humans. Many dolphins take an interest in human activities. They’ve been known to save injured or wounded swimmers and desperate boaters who would have been doomed otherwise. Divers have often told stories about dolphins who have hovered near them, seeming to watch out for their safety.

 How did wounded help you understand what injured meant?
