Kathryn Tucker Windham June 2, By:

Childhood Mrs. Windham spent most of her childhood in Thomasville, Alabama and attended public school there. At age twelve, she began her writing career as movie editor for her cousin, Earl Tucker, at a weekly newspaper, The Thomasville Times.

Education She earned a B.A. degree from Huntingdon College. Mrs. Windham received several honorary doctorates from Huntington College, The University of Montevallo, and Spring College.

Family Kathryn married Amasa in They moved to Selma where they had their three kids. Her husband died of a heart attack in 1956.

Career After her youngest child went to college, she joined the crew for The Selma Times Journal, where she won several Associated Press awards for writing and photography. She left news papering in 1973 and became the Community Relations Coordinator for the Area Agency Aging.

Major Accomplishments The Thomasville Campus of Alabama Southern Community College is home to the Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum. In 1995 Mrs. Windham received the Governors Award for the Arts and The Lifetime Achievement Award.

Major Accomplishments In 2001 Mrs. Windham was inducted into The University of Alabama College of Communications Hall of Fame. On August 18 th 2003 she was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor nominated by famous novelist Harper Lee. In 2008 Mrs. Windham was named ABA citizen of the year by the Alabama Broadcasters Association

Mrs. Windham and Jeffery Jeffery is the friendly ghost that took up residence in the Windham house in A picture was taken of Jeffery that night and was sent to Figh (a noted collector of ghost stories). The family said they heard footsteps and saw things moving without anybody holding them.

Mrs. Windham’s Ghost Stories Her first book about ghosts was Thirteen Alabama Ghosts and Jeffery. In 1971 she wrote Jeffery Introduces Thirteen More Southern Ghosts. Some other books that she wrote are Thirteen Georgia Ghosts and Jeffery (1973), Thirteen Mississippi Ghosts and Jeffery (1974),and Thirteen Tennessee Ghosts and Jeffery (1976).
