I write my dreams I discover the laughter I share the things I think My body grows old and fails me, But my soul lives on in ink. By: Brod Bagert Poets shape an ordinary everyday experience into an emotional universal that calls to readers, “Come sing with me; come feel with me.

Children like poems they can understand. They also enjoy poems that stretch their understanding. Poetry can :  Poems can make us laugh  Poems can create images  Poems can express feelings

When children are first introduced to poetry they generally prefer humorous poems with strong rhythm and rhyme over free verse with abstract symbolism. They enjoy narrative poetry because it is based on their natural love of story. Children’s responses to poetry depend heavily on the way it is introduced to them. Like:  Contemporary poems  Poems they can understand  Narrative poems  Poems with rhyme, rhythm, sound  Poems that relate to their experiences Dislike:  Poems that have figurative language and imaginary  Highly abstract poems  Haiku poems

Poets manipulate the elements of sound, rhythm, and meaning to create an impact more powerful than any found in prose. Poets use language in such a special way that there are many specialized terms used to describe it.  Words as Sound  Words as Rhythm  Words as Meaning: Imagery

Individual poems can be judge on how understandable they are, on their appeal, and on their use of poetic elements. We can also judge the overall nature of our selections in terms of the diversity of content, moods, and language use, as well as the variety of forms that it contains.  Narrative Poems: Poetry as story  Limericks and Riddles  Concrete Poems  Lyric poems: Statements of mood and feeling
