Activities 1.Teacher will read excerpts from Uncle Tom’s Cabin, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe who lived in Cincinnati. Students will discuss in groups what effect the novel may have had on people at that time. Class discussion of events that followed publication. 2.Students will play a simulated game, Underground Railroad, in which they take the part of passengers, conductors, and bounty hunters.

Activities, cont. 3.Working in groups, students will construct an illustrated timeline of events of the Civil War. Individually, they will choose one event and write about its importance. 4.Students will role play a political discussion between supporters of the war effort and opponents. 5.Students will draw a political cartoon, write an editorial, or give a speech to influence opinion about the Civil War.

Activities, cont. 4.Students will discuss in groups problems that women faced during the war. They will brainstorm possible solutions. 5.Students will read about Margaret Garner, an escaped slave who killed one of her own children rather than return her to slavery. Class will discuss her decision.

Activities, cont. 4.Students will research Ohio’s natural resources and determine their importance to the war effort. 5.Students will write a letter to a farmer who is fighting in the war and whose family is running the farm alone. They can be either the farmer’s wife or a child. They should describe economic conditions and problems they are facing.

They will research their person and write a report on him. 5.Students will learn about and discuss which people in Ohio were allowed to vote during that time and who were not allowed and what effect that had.
