The 13 English Colonies – Chp. 3 What is a colony? *Land that is owned by a country but located somewhere else. (Ex. England is located in Europe but her colonies are located in North America) What is a region? *An area of that shares certain like characteristics. (Ex. Climate, Language, Geography, Societal Aspects) - New England colonies have poor, rocky soil -Middle colonies have a mixture of religions -Southern colonies use slave labor

Southern Colonies The first permanent English settlement was established at Jamestown, Virginia in Most settlers who came to the South were adventurers with little survival skills. Life was very difficult in the beginning. “The Starving Time” – winter, disease, famine John Rolfe smuggled South American tobacco into the colony and married Pocahontas, daughter of a powerful Powhatan chief. Slave labor is key in the South. Slave codes designed to control slaves. Even instances of attempted rebellions and much fighting with Native Americans. Maryland will be founded as a safe haven for Catholics in particular. The Toleration Act of Georgia established as a safe place for people in debt. South is defined by cash crops and a warm climate with a long growing season.
