UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 1of 13 Conducting of Exo- Atmospheric Interception Tests at Compact Size Test Range Dr. J. Rovinsky

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 2of 13 BACKGROUND Test ranges availability: Exo-atmospheric interception testing requires generally huge test ranging facilities due both target and interceptor trajectories. Test ranges for interception testing at high altitudes for target ranges above 1500 km are highly limited around the world. Cost and schedule constrains: Targets have significant impact to the interception test preparation and conducting (in both cost and schedule terms) Flexible and Capable for Tailoring Targets are Required

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 3of 13 IAI-MLM METHOD The unique patented IAI-MLM method for conducting interception tests enables the creation of a generic solution for interception tests execution. According to this method: The ground, air and space safety issues during the interception test are dramatically reduced. Moreover, the generation of target and interceptor debris may be reduced even tailored for specific interception test objectives.

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 4of 13 CONDUCTING INTERCEPTION TEST

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 5of 13 REQUIRED TEST RANGE SHORTENING Simulated threat (black) vs. IAI/MLM target (red) trajectories The test range requirements for interception may be tailored to specific defense system's acquisition range by special target trajectory shaping. “ Wasted" range of target trajectory below the horizon (over the defense system sensors acquisition range) is dramatically reduced

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 6of 13 TARGET MISSILE (TYPE 1) The dummy target consists of two inflatable balloons: The cylindrical balloon ejected from the carrier shall emulate the specified booster of the target. The conical balloon is tailored accordingly to the specified emulated RV geometry that shall be inflated around the carrier relevant part The target missile is used only as a carrier for injection of a dummy target to the place, directionality and velocity at the relevant part of exo-atmosphere trajectory of the simulated threat in which the defense system is active.

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 7of 13 TYPE 1 TARGET FRONT SECTION At the special cases of very strictly range field safety problems Type 2 target configuration the can be used: Both inflatable structures - RV and Booster can be ejected from the carrier. This method avoids creating any debris during the interception test.

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 8of 13 THREAT’S WARHEAD EMULATION The compact rigid target's front section (typical warhead sized) emulates the warhead within the enemy RV. For a successful interception, the interceptor should hit the exact aim point of the target. Only at this case a positive system's look/kill assessment will be achieved Flexible position of rigid body inside the inflatable RV

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 9of 13 TARGET MISSILE (TYPE 3) The target missile consists of rigid RV and inflatable booster.

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 10of 13 SUPPORT of SYSTEM PROCESSES System Process Type of target Inflatable RV includes rigid core Inflatable RV with no rigid core Rigid RV Target acquisition Full representation of the threat behavior in space Tracking Full representation of the threat behavior in space Discrimination Flexible signatures/dynamics Engaging√√√ End GameExoExoExo/Endo Hitting Few cm accuracy indication Kill assessment Compact size (IR& debris cloud) - No indication Full size (IR& debris cloud) Test debriefing√√√ 12 3

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 11of 13 THREAT’S SIGNATURES EMULATION Cylindrical and conical parts of the dummy target are capable to manifest all needed signatures for the defense system under test (RCS, IR, space dynamics, maneuvering, geometry: size & shape etc.). Any predefined aspect angle to a chosen direction or dynamics (spinning rate or tumbling rate) can be accurately controlled. 5 Cars = 10 Meter Exact Geometry and 1:1 Size Scale No Distortions, Smooth Cylinder – Exact RCS and IR

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 12of 13 FLEXIBILTY The target enables representing a variety of threats. Any threat can be simulated with no impact to the carrier missile. Relevant part of the long range threat’s trajectory can be presented at shorter test range. Unmatched unique flexibility of building of an ultra wide spectrum of threats with different combined end characteristics regarding the trajectories' kinematics, RCS, IR signature, geometry (size and shape) and maneuvering.

UNCLASSIFIED CMMI Level 5, 2 nd Time Israeli BMD conference 2010Test and Demonstration 13of 13 SUMMARY MLM/IAI target major capabilities: Relevant part of long range threat trajectory at compact size test range Simulation of variety of threat’s kinematics using same carrier missile Flexibility for target mission planning and changing close to interception test performance date Flexibility for RV & Booster signatures creation Flexibility for representation of variety of RV & Booster geometries Flexibility for threat’s space dynamics representation The proposed generic solution actually cancels default constraints originating at the target missile parameters, such as geometry, signatures and dynamic behaviors, as it appears equal to the target parameters for the defense system.
