Climate Types of Russia  Steppe  Humid continental  Subarctic  Tundra

Steppe Climate  The steppes receive more rain than deserts, averaging 10 inches 20 a year. Not enough precipitation for trees to grow, except by a river. Plants have adapted to drought conditions by being small and growing extensive root systems. Temperatures vary from summer to winter.

Humid Continental Climate The humid continental climate has long, cold and snowy winters. The summers are short but can be very hot. Deciduous trees grow in forests, and vast grasslands flourish in some areas of this zone. The humid continental climate is found over great expanses in the temperate regions of the mid-latitudes, like Russia. The humid continental climate has long, cold and snowy winters. The humid continental climate is found over great expanses in the temperate regions of the mid-latitudes, like Russia.

Subarctic The subarctic climate is found in high latitude nearest mid-latitude zones. The few people living here face severely cold and bitter winters. Temperatures do rise above freezing during the summer months. Forests called Taiga also grow in the subarctic regions of Russia.

Tundra This climate is harsh and dry. In parts of the tundra and subarctic regions, the lower layers of soil are called permafrost because they stay permanently frozen. Only the top few inches of the ground thaw during summer months. Because the surface is flat and the soil below is frozen water tends to stay on the land when it melts. This provides the moisture that plants need to grow. Sturdy grasses and low growing berry bushes are found in the tundra. This climate is harsh and dry. Impacts on Russia’s Economy Since they have a subarctic climate, it downsizes population, decreasing the amount of money they make from people. Not making enough money for their countries population.
