WELCOMING ALL MEMBERS The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using.

WORKSHOP FOCUS Principles in the Third Tradition IP #29: An Introduction to NA Meetings How we can better welcome all addicts 2

The Third Tradition helps NA grow by encouraging us to welcome others. It Works: How and Why, Tradition Three

MEMBERSHIP SURVEY CAME TO NA VIA TREATMENT OR DRUG COURTS

STAYED IN BECAUSE OF IDENTIFICATION 87% 71% OTHER NA MEMBERS 64% WELCOMING AND SUPPORTIVE GROUP

Our newest IP Approved at WSC 2014 IP #29

What helped you feel at home? What are some ways you felt like a “foreigner” when you came to NA?

WELCOMING ALL MEMBERS Addicts demographically different from most members in the NA community Addicts on drug replacement therapy (DRT) Addicts on medication Addicts still using/chronically relapsing

Desire is not a measurable commodity. It lives in the heart of each individual member. It Works: How and Why, Tradition Three

We look for ways to help instead of judge. Our task is to fan the flame of desire, not dampen it. It Works: How and Why, Tradition Three

The group is not the jury of desire. No addict should be denied the opportunity to stay long enough to develop that desire. We can nurture that desire with loving acceptance. It Works: How and Why, Tradition Three

THIRD TRADITION PRINCIPLES TOLERANCE COMPASSION ANONYMITY HUMILITY EMPATHY LOVE

SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION 1. What gets in the way of me practicing Third Tradition principles? 2. What can I do to help my group better practice Tradition Three principles?

Regardless of what you may be taking when you first come to NA, you are welcome.

We are not professionals and NA has no opinions on medical matters; we can only share our personal experiences with one another.

We strongly discourage any harassment, threat, or disturbing behavior before, during, and after our meetings.

What collective action can we take to maintain an atmosphere of recovery while still ensuring that all addicts feel welcome in our meetings?

WELCOMING ALL MEMBERS Put on a Welcoming All Members workshop locally Send your input to Get outlines and PowerPoints for this and other workshops Contribute to the Traditions Book Project:
