( 3) Very High Performance Mbone/Digital Video Bandwidth of 10~50 Mbps per session (SC’98,….) Special arrangement (4) Other Multicast Application Cache Delivery of software and data 4.1 Application: Mbone and Digital Television (1) Regular Mbone Bandwidth of around 250 Kbps per session with vBNS, CA*net2 and others Packet loss may be less than 1% (2) High Performance Mbone Bandwidth of 1.5 Mbps per session with vBNS,CA*net2 and others

4.2 Application: Cache Experimental Global Cache Hierarchy. With vBNS and other research networks. Project Members are APAN, NLANR, TERENA,… Annual Cache Workshop. APAN vBNS Networks in Europe Networks in Asia Networks in Americas...

4.3 IPv6 Experimental IPv6 networks APAN member countries, vBNS and others. Expected to be the production network soon(?)

4.4 Application: High Energy physics APAN ESNET Collaboration among high energy physics community Typical usage of video conferencing exchange of image and other data remote access of computers STAR TAP Sample collaboration projects : KAIST- Princeton University KEK- Argonne National Lab

4.5 Application: Space Science APAN NREN Collaboration among space science community. (GOIN’99, ….) Typical project members are NASA and its project partners in USA. Space projects in Japan. STAR TAP

4.6 Application: BioInformatics Collaboration among BioInformatics community. Use APAN and commodity Internet. Formed APBioNet with cooperation of counterparts in USA and Europe.

4.7 Application: Medical Informatics Project collaboration of medical applications in Asia-Pacific region such as Japan Korea Singapore USA Typical applications include Remote Diagnostics Medical education

4.8 Application: Education Mbone and other tools can be used to offer courses, seminars, and video conferencing for education community in Asia-Pacific. Video archive may be used to compliment viewing of the seminars and classes offered in other continents.

6. Remarks : Network - Need high performance backbone networks in Asia - Need high performance national network in each country to interconnect domestic gigapops. - Need to experiment various gigapops to find out optimal gigapop architectures.

- APAN is still in initial phase, and we have to go through much trial and errors before we can offer stable services. - We need “killer applications”, which convince sponsors. - Need to extend collaboration to Europe. - Need to develop better infrastructure in Asia. - Please send comment to Remarks : Management
