A Storm’s Story (So far…) The Sun warms the Earth through radiation. The Earth’s surface warms unevenly. Different types of air masses are created over.
Global Winds. Air Movement Wind is the movement of air caused by differences in air pressure Wind ALWAYS moves from areas of high air pressure to areas.
Air rises at the equator and sinks at the poles The equator receives more direct sun than other areas so the air is less dense and rises to create low.
Winds Wind is the horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. All winds are caused by differences in air.
Ocean Current s.  Warm currents flow away from the equator.  Cold currents flow toward the equator. Ocean Currents.

Wind! What is Wind? Its simply moving air! What causes Wind? There are several factors… 2/16/2010

Factors that Cause Wind… ALL wind is caused by warm air rising in one location, and cool air sinking nearby… We call these blobs of rising and sinking air Airmasses An Airmass is a “chunk” of air that has the same temperature and density. Wind is a direct result of a Convection Current thats created by the rising and sinking airmasses…

A Convection Current in the Atmosphere…

So what type of weather are those people experiencing? Person A Warmer Temperatures Clouds/Precip Low Air Pressure NO Wind! Person B Variable Temps P. Cloudy Skys Changing Air Pressure STRONGER WINDS! Person C Cooler Temps Clear Skies High Air Pressure NO Wind!

How Winds are Named… Winds are named based on where they are coming from, not where they are headed to… A Compass Rose…

Examples… A North West Wind (NW) An East Wind (E) A South East Wind (SE)

Name that Wind…
