Nicola Hogan, Project Manager JISC funded SUSTE-TECH project Sustainable ICT in Universities & Colleges

Principle Aims of the Sustainable ICT Project To help Universities and Colleges across the UK become more sustainable in their choice and use of ICT systems (mix & match) To reduce ICT related energy use, reduce CO2 emissions, running costs Improving their “green credentials” : increase in college applications, help with funding avoid penalties.

What is PC Powerdown ? It’s the automatic SHUTDOWN of PC’s when not in use. Why can’t PC’s remain running ? …..wasting energy. costs money creates CO 2 emissions making £ savings and CO 2 targets difficult to achieve

Other energy saving features Most PC’s & software have an energy saving mode, but its not the same thing.. PC’s only hibernate and go on standby, manage users not the PC, so it won’t revert to powersaving if changed or when user logs off...still use energy unnecessarily, Relying on people to switch PC’s off DOESN’T work

IT Managers Dream, Energy & Environmental Managers NIGHTMARE

Energy Wastage For example : a 100W PC left running for 24/7 but only being used 9am-5pm left on for 16hrs a day (for nothing) and 2 days on weekend 77% of that energy use is unnecessary ! electricity costs = £0.08 per kWh = £0.08/1,000 x 100 x 24x7x40 = £53.76

Energy Wastage But that’s just one computer, U&C’s have 100’s & 1000’s of PC’s all running, all of the time.. it adds up additional expense of lighting and heating shorter PC lifespan leads to even more costs and more e-Waste

PC Powerdown at the University of Liverpool Rolled out by Lisa Nelson in May 2006 as part of JISC’s Greening of ICT project Why ? To save on ICT related energy use: 1,600-1,900 student PCs and 2,000-2,500 staff PCs were running 24/ 7 wasting 1 million hours of energy each month

PC Powerdown at the University of Liverpool Lisa calculated that 128 hrs/week wasted, 665kWh/year wasted, £53.20 wasted …per computer Amounted to £50,000 being wasted in energy costs per 1,000 PC’s, each year !

Graph showing how the energy usage dropped as PC Powerdown was applied:

Barriers Faced ICT said to leave PCs on, more convenient, But there was concern about losing data cost involved takes too much time to wake computer up again.. but PC Powerdown addresses those concerns

Barriers to Implementing Change 1. Cuts in Funding PC powerdown …is free. 2. Poor Communication Between ICT, Energy & Env. Managers and Facilities, Buildings & Estates 2. (b) Communication between users : Staff & students are not IT specialists, not familiar with the various levels of energy use, unsure of the difference between hibernate, standby etc.

Solutions to Barriers Solution : 4M’s Do the math, meet with all stakeholders, merge ideas with technology & make IT happen. Install PC Powerdown, NightWatchman, Powerman or whatever suits your institutions needs and equipment best

Results Massive £ and CO 2 savings Won the EAUC’s Green Gown Green ICT Award in 2010 Still in operation at University of Liverpool has even been improved Powerman : essentially the same thing but also works with staff computers.

Success Stories WLC estimated a 35-50% savings in energy use by rolling out aggressively-set power management to all college PC’s. Edinburg’s Napier University implemented a tiered level of PC power reduction across all staff and student PCs using a combination of hibernation, sleeping and Powerdown. An estimated 624,000 kWh/y was saved at ENU by powering down 2,000 staff PCs from 9pm - 8am giving a total cost saving in year one of £51,579

Success Stories QMU : automatic shutdown of non 24/7 PC hardware. Angus College : Reduced overall ICT energy by 15% through Microsoft group policy management on all student desktop PC’s. switched off 9:30pm-8:00am switched staff PC’s from 7:30pm -8:00 am inactive PC’s (an hour) shut off automatically. Saving £8,100

Advice for those wishing to make change Get the communication right! Explain what it is your trying to achieve, why its necessary, how your going to implement it ask for their co-operation and help make them feel involved report successes

Advice for those wishing to make change If the Green Agenda approach fails, try cost savings approach, type of newer technology being used must have IT managers on board, keep the momentum going

Final Message Energy monitoring and reduction is important Save money reach carbon targets, improve institutions green credentials, mandatory in 2012 green ICT makes life easier for everyone Any questions ?
